Created by Ilze Vos in 1999, this farm stall has become an Overberg landmark . Travellers from all over the world stop here to experience the peaceful country setting, to watch the world go by under a cool vine-covered veranda, and savour hearty country fare you would not normally have at home. Ilze’s passion for unpretentious tasty fare has set her apart. Lovers of good food keep coming back for more. She turns the ordinary into extra-ordinary though careful selection of ingredients and experience.

The farm stall itself is filled with delightful farm visuals and goodies. Browsing requires time. Even going to the bathroom is an experience. For the road there are candies and homemade tarts, for the gourmet cooks there is truffle oil, for the health-orientated there are honey rye rusks. Plus plenty bottles of extra-ordinary jams and preserves, deli items and gifts. Heaven !!

For the young, and young at heart, there is a slide and hula hoops to expend the extra energy gained from the Farm stall’s mouth-watering selection of cakes. And Ilze does not skimp on helpings. You will be sated but wanting to come back for more.

DON’T pass by Fisherhaven without popping in to visit this “new kid on the block!”

20160102_120535The Blue Roof Pub & Restaurant has only been open a month and already is becoming a popular venue for locals and visitors who have heard about it. I was impressed with the open, spaciousness of the place – there is a downstairs area with tables that leads out to an open air section with picnic tables and umbrellas.

But for me, the best part is the upstairs eating area with wide panoramic windows that overlook the distant lagoon. This is also where the bar is positioned along with the wide screen TV for those who want to watch the sport.

We initially sat by the windows on the high stools and later migrated to our table where we ordered pork ribs and one of our party ordered steak.The food was very tasty, well presented and served after a short but acceptable wait. There was a good selection of wines too.

20160102_120454The waitress was attentive and pleasant, but run off her feet – I’m sure there will be other staff added soon, seeing as they have only been open a short time. The owner, Paul, paid us a visit and had a good conversation with us but discreetly disappeared when our food arrived – he is a gracious host and does the rounds of all his patrons, even attending to small things like getting ice when the waitress is occupied elsewhere.

If there was any criticism at all it would be that it would have been nice to have had a bit more choice on alternative items available if one doesn’t eat chips or rice (like mushrooms, courgettes or brinjal) – however, Paul did assure us that he had intentions of expanding the menu and adding other items.

The Blue Roof Pub is a gem and anyone driving past Fisherhaven on their way to Hermanus and NOT popping in is missing out on some great food and a lovely venue.

Paul is an experienced restrauteur and I would expect this pub & restaurant to become one of the “sought after secrets” some would prefer to keep as their own special place and while allowing the masses go on to Hermanus.

It’s been a while since we were here last. The pub is under new management and Dylan and his team are doing it justice!

The atmosphere is friendly and the food is terrific. I had the “Fox Platter” while the wife had the Calamari …. both were excellent! The food was generous and very well cooked and presented.

I must confess, this was the THIRD time in as many weeks I have been there and each time I have had the “Fox Platter” I enjoyed it so much the first time, and every subsequent time the quality has been the same. It consists of a variety of kebabs (chicken, beef & tomato) with some great calamari and chips with a REALLY good tartare sauce and delicious onion rings. It fills one up and is a tasty variety of a meal. For R78.00 I consider it good value for money!

My wife’s calamari was excellent and a generous serving, too.

Gunner CollageSo yesterday, Phil (who was visiting Napier from Jozi) and I decided to give Gunner’s new menu a try … he had the Chicken Schnitzel with baked potato and I had the garlic mini-steak Prego Roll. Both were delicious and good value for money!

The bonus was being able to look out over the valley towards the mountains. Great service, atmosphere and views!
